Essay for String Quartet examines registral and beat hierarchy in developing the primary theme from my Symphony No.3 in E Minor: Concert in Three Acts. Essay transitions between traditional quartet voicing and complete inversion of registral hierarchy while shifting from a strong sense of beat hierarchy to its near absence and back again.
I excerpted this composition, originally the symphony’s third movement, without musical changes, simply reformatted for performance as an independent chamber work.
