Rhapsody for One
For Solo Trumpet
PROGRAM NOTES
Commissioned to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein, Rhapsody for One is a concise composition for solo trumpet which weaves abstracted fragments of Bernstein’s Overture to Candide into the composer’s own colorful, chromatic language to create a single, cohesive fabric.
The piece is divided into three sections. The first, a light, chromatic adagietto liberamente, features lyrical phrases and playful runs. The middle section is a quick, energetic allegro molto, featuring flashy fanfares, dueling with lighter, contrasting characters, which give way to a heroic Maestoso brilliante section. Finally, Rhapsody for One returns to the lyrical adagietto liberamente to complete the piece.
